The June 2012 Quarterly Committee Meeting for Gold Coast MTB Club Inc. is to be held on Sunday 17th June 2012. The meeting will be held at the Hinze Dam MTB Precinct site commencing at 10am. There is a small section of the new track which is rideable and you are welcome to bring a bike to ride that section on completion of the meeting.
Whilst this is a management meeting of the Committee, all Club members are encouraged to attend and take part in the management affairs of our Club. Non-club members are also invited to attend so that they may gain an understanding into what our Club aims and objectives are which hopefully, will encourage them to join as members!. Directions to Hinze Dam are on the Links & Info Tab. |

Members of the management committee along with Gillian Duncan met with senior management of Qld Parks & Wildlife Service today to structure a Trail Care Agreement between QPWS and Gold Coast MTB Club for Nerang National Park. From the outset, discussions were very encouraging with QPWS agreeing to our Club undertaking trail care activities on a number of existing trails and committing to fund a Mapping & Trail Assessment project which is being undertaken by Gillian. Gillian's project will provide the necessary information required for QPWS (in conjunction with our Club) to formally legitimise multiple trails within Nerang however; at this stage those trails will be limited to cross country type riding.
This process will take time to complete however; processes for access to undertake organised trail care on Casuarina and 3 Hills trails immediately has been put into place and activity dates will be advised in due course. In the meantime it is requested that the word be spread through the mountain biking community that unauthorised trail works within Nerang National Park are to CEASE IMMEDIATELY! Continued illegal trail development will only serve to hinder the legitimising of many trails in Nerang - please pass the message on! If you observe illegal trail building in Nerang please ask the responsible people to stop and explain the reasons why. Further updates will be given as they come to hand but just remember, this will be a long process but the eventual outcome will be good for mountain biking and mountain bikers. National Parks have made a commitment to finishing the review process by August of this year when we can look to changes being made. So please stay away from track building until this is finished, except for offical trail care days to be announced soon. |

In 2003 the Club initiated Trail Care in the Nerang State Forest. Members who worked signed on as Trail Care Volunteers for the Queensland National Parks and Wild Life Service. Trail Care is planned in advance in consultation with the Chief Ranger and work is carried out in line with IMBA standards with focus on drainage and erosion control and in accordance with the agreed plan. Do you remember the old Casuarina track that acted as a fast running drain for the lower forest? At least it took most of the blue metal away! Without Trail Care there was the likelihood of complete closure of the badly eroded Three Hills track. Trail Care redesigned the top and bottom hills of the Tree Hills track and they came through the rains with minor problems, some of which have already been fixed. Next winter the middle hill will be redesigned. Dozens of members have worked on Trail Care days over the years. Altogether 28 such days have been held with very positive results and hundreds of man hours invested in sustainable track work. The National Parks Service is tightly funded and Mountain Bike tracks could not exist without extensive volunteer work. On a day to day continuing basis members remove fallen trees from tracks and report larger trees on Fire Trails and tracks to the National Parks Service Chief Ranger for chain saw removal. So get off your bike and help remove a tree. Since recent rains over 60 rubble drains have been built to make the Casuarina track an all weather track and extensive work has been done on the Three Hills track to achieve this same result. Beforehand, members gathered rocks and stored them at two central locations. The National Parks Service then moved them to preselected sites with a mechanical wheelbarrow, sure beats doing it by hand. The club would like to thank all of the members who have volunteered and the Club would also like to thank non-member volunteers that have assisted in these projects. If you haven’t volunteered think about it next time. |
